Laine Redpath - Body Stress Release
Laine is a journalist by training and worked in the publishing industry for many years. But after having twins and losing both her parents to stress ("Each in their own way.") – she developed both a chronic pain condition and a passion for understanding the nervous system: how to relieve the pain a stressed system brings and how to build resilience. She is a qualified Body Stress Release (BSR) Practitioner, Clinical Somatics Exercise instructor and has a Certificate in Humanistic Counselling from the Gestalt Centre in London.
"I was in pain for 6 years after having my twins and, in the end, BSR was the only thing that brought real, lasting relief. So, I had to learn how to do it. Being diagnosed with ADHD 2 years ago renewed my fascination with the nervous system and the impact a stressed system can have, not just on our health but on the way we perceive reality.
I am so grateful to BSR for the release it brought me and to Clinical Somatics for giving me the tools to maintain an organised, vital body. I can’t wait to introduce you too."
Body Stress Release
Body Stress Release (BSR) is a safe, gentle bodywork technique that helps your body reengage its natural healing ability by using a precise pattern of ‘releases’ where tension has become stuck and pain has set in. The technique recognises that the body reacts to stress in a highly organised way along lines of tension. Releases are firm but gentle using thumb or fingers along these lines.
What happens at a session?
After an initial chat about your pain, you’ll lie down on your front on the massage table, fully clothed for 20-30 minutes. Then another 5-10 minutes on your front.
The pattern and areas of release will depend on your pain – whether it’s physical or emotional/ psychological (like anxiety, for example). But every pattern focuses along the spine and neck first.
After your release you’ll feel taller, calmer and more aligned.
What length session should I book?
You know your body best. So, I will ask you this question: is your pain easy to explain? By that I mean, is it from an injury, or from repeated mouse-manoeuvring at your desk job, or from feeling tense all day in a stressful life situation? If yes, I recommend a straight BSR session where we focus on filling the time with a hands-on release.
However if pain has been around for years and you no longer know why, or if you suspect it’s your body holding on to a past trauma, or if it’s not pain, it’s just tension that won’t go away, that keeps sneaking back in no matter how many downward dogs or steady breaths you do… then ‘embodied talking’ can be very helpful. Exploring your history, your situation, getting to know the story of your pain so that it can be heard and move on.
This is the reason that I trained at the Gestalt Centre in London for a certificate in humanistic counselling. I have found that for many, many clients, having the space to talk, to reflect and to let go is the beginning of transforming pain into power.
Type of sessions and cost:
A 1 hour introductory consultation that includes a BSR session £65
BSR 45 minutes £55 / 30 minutes £45 (available for maintenance clients)
BSR & embodied talking 1 hour £70
Clinical Somatics Exercises
Think of BSR as the treatment and Clinical Somatics as the aftercare you can learn do for yourself.
Clinical Somatics is neuromuscular education that uses the groundbreaking technique
of pandiculation to retrain muscle memory and relieve pain.
It engages the nervous system in an active learning process that consists of very slow, focused, conscious movements (mostly lying down). The movement techniques used in Clinical Somatics teach the nervous system how to release chronic muscle tension and stand and move in natural, efficient ways so that you aren’t putting yourself in pain or doing damage to your body.
At each session you will learn 1 or 2 new exercises depending on your pain. I offer free weekly Zoom (online) check-in follow-up to see how you are going with the exercise and to answer any questions.
Type of sessions and cost:
• A 50 minute 1:1 class £70
• A 50 minute 1:1 class & BSR 90 minutes £95 Bring a friend’ and small group booking are available.
